Ukraine Entry Requirements

Ukraine Entry Requirements

Visa, immigration, and customs information

Important Notice Entry requirements can change at any time. Always verify current requirements with official government sources before traveling.
Ukraine throws its doors open to most Western visitors: no visa needed for short stays, and a slick e-visa for everyone else. At passport control, expect sharp questions about where you'll sleep, how you'll leave, and whether your wallet can handle the trip. Printed proof of health insurance covering Ukraine is non-negotiable; Kyiv Boryspil and Lviv Danylo Halytskyi airports run random spot-checks. The officer stamps your passport on entry and again on exit, keep that page handy when you're heading home.

Visa Requirements

Entry permissions vary by nationality. Find your category below.

EU, UK, USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, South Korea, UAE, and many Latin-American countries can walk straight in for tourism or business without a visa.

All EU/EEA states United Kingdom United States Canada Australia New Zealand Japan South Korea UAE Argentina Brazil Chile Mexico Panama Uruguay

Those 90 days are counted across the whole 180-day window, no matter how many times you cross the border.

Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA/eVisa)
Up to 30 days per visit

More than 40 nationalities, China, India, South Africa, Thailand, Philippines included, must secure a single-entry or double-entry eVisa before departure.

How to Apply: File the application on the MFA web portal: upload your passport bio page, a recent photo, and proof of health insurance covering Ukraine. Turnaround is usually 3 working days.
Cost: USD 20 single-entry, USD 30 double-entry

Print the PDF eVisa approval. Airlines will ask for it at check-in.

Visa Required
Sticker visas range from 30 days single-entry up to 5 years multiple-entry, depending on purpose and the paperwork you bring.

If your passport isn't on either the visa-free or eVisa list, you'll need a sticker visa from an Ukrainian embassy or consulate abroad.

How to Apply: Book an appointment at the nearest Ukrainian mission. Hand over the form, photo, passport, invitation or hotel voucher, proof of funds, and insurance. Processing takes 10, 15 calendar days.

To qualify for a multiple-entry visa, you must have used a single-entry visa earlier or show frequent travel needs in black and white.

Arrival Process

After landing you hit immigration first, then baggage claim, then customs. Ukrainian airports split queues for Ukrainian passport holders, EU/visa-free foreigners, and eVisa/visa holders.

1
Primary Passport Control
Have your passport, the completed migration card (handed out on the plane or at kiosks), and, if relevant, your printed eVisa or residence permit ready.
2
Secondary Document Check
The officer might ask for proof of accommodation, a return or onward ticket, cash or a bank statement, and valid medical insurance covering Ukraine.
3
Biometric Capture
Fingerprints and a facial photo are collected from every foreign visitor over 12 years old.
4
Stamp & Migration Card Return
The officer stamps your passport, tears off the bottom half of the migration card, and gives the top half back, keep it until you exit.
5
Baggage & Customs
Grab your bags and file through the green lane (nothing to declare) or red lane (goods to declare).

Documents to Have Ready

Passport valid 3 months beyond intended departure
Must be issued within the last 10 years for biometric capture machines to read.
Printed eVisa or visa sticker
A printed visa is required if your nationality demands one. Digital copies on a phone will be turned away.
Proof of health insurance
The policy must name Ukraine explicitly and cover medical expenses plus COVID-related treatment for the full length of your stay.
Migration card
The migration card is handed out in-flight; keep the stamped section for hotel registration and departure control.
Accommodation confirmation
Bring a hotel voucher, Airbnb confirmation, or a private invitation letter listing the host's address and telephone.

Tips for Smooth Entry

Carry at least USD 45 or EUR 45 equivalent for each day of your stay. Officers sometimes demand proof on the spot.
Print every document: Ukraine's border Wi-Fi is patchy and phone batteries can quit.
If you plan to transit to Crimea or Donetsk/Luhansk, Ukrainian law insists on special permits. Ignore this and you risk being barred from future entry.

Customs & Duty-Free

Ukraine sticks to green and red channels. Personal goods within the limits below sail through duty-free; anything above, or on the banned list, must be declared in the red channel or surrendered.

Alcohol
You may bring 1 L of spirits over 22 % ABV or 2 L of wine up to 22 % ABV plus 4 L of still wine.
Minimum age 18. Amounts are cumulative. Exceeding any one triggers duty.
Tobacco
200 cigarettes, or 50 cigars, or 250 g of smoking tobacco
Age 18+. E-cigarette liquids count toward tobacco limits.
Currency
EUR 10,000 or equivalent must be declared in writing
Form is available at red channel. Keep copy for departure.
Gifts/Goods
Goods up to EUR 500 value per adult if arriving by air
If you arrive by land or sea, the duty-free goods cap falls to EUR 50. Electronics count toward that total.

Special Situations

Additional requirements for specific circumstances.

Traveling with Children

Ukrainian law demands that a lone parent carry notarized consent from the other parent. If the child travels with a third adult, both parents must sign off. Bring the child's birth certificate with apostille if asked.

Traveling with Pets

Dogs, cats, and ferrets need an ISO-compliant microchip, a rabies vaccination at least 21 days old but under 12 months, and an EU or Ukrainian veterinary certificate issued within 10 days of travel. Birds need extra avian influenza tests.

Extended Stays

Apply for a temporary residence permit (TRP) at the local Migration Service office before your 90-day visa-free window closes. You'll need an Ukrainian tax number, a rental contract, health insurance extended for Ukraine, and a clear reason, work, study, or family reunification.
